BERWICK POST

HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions face what promoter Rob Godfrey describes as a ‘vital’ meeting against the Berwick Bandits at the Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Friday, 7.30pm).

Following home defeats to Sheffield and Peterborough, Godfrey realises the importance of a Scorpions’ win against the Bandits.

He says: “It is still early days and we’ve only raced five of our 24 Premier League matches so there is time to turn things around.

“But by the same token, I’m not daft and we have to be realistic. The league table doesn’t lie and we’re at the wrong end of it. Things have to change pretty quickly. And that’s why the Berwick match is vital.

“I read the riot act out to the team following Monday’s defeat to Peterborough. They have tomorrow to prove themselves, because we must have a team that is capable of winning its home meetings. I expect a fighting performance.”

A couple of very familiar names line up for Berwick, in former Scorpions Thomas Jorgensen and Theo Pijper.

Meanwhile, Godfrey is backing recent signing, 18-year-old Dane Andreas Lyager, to soon be getting amongst the points.

“Andreas was bitterly disappointed with his display against Peterborough. His bike wasn’t right for our track. He went back to Denmark after the meeting to get himself sorted out and will be back on Friday with an engine that will hopefully do the trick.

“He’s clearly got potential. He’s been scoring points for fun in the Danish Super League against some decent opposition; he just needs to get everything right, and I’m convinced he will start to fly.”

There are 21 heats of action in total on Friday, with a six-race second-half National Junior League meeting between Halifax and Berwick.
