This Sunday, 6th March, Scunthorpe Speedway’s eight Winter Series reaches its climax with the tenth meeting since the middle of November. The four adult speedway classes take centre stage from 11am with around forty riders set to compete and half of those in the Open Class alone. Last Sunday saw the sixth and final round for six more classes and they were joined, on a trial basis, by classes for quad bikes and road bikes. Class winners on the day were Sam Hurst (Flat Track), Jack Bell (Adult Pit Bikes), Kean Dicken (Youth 500), Leon Flint (Youth 250), Mickie Simpson (Youth 125/150), Leon Collier (Junior 110), Steve Cook (Road Bikes) and Nick Wright (Quad Bikes).

With many of the youth speedway riders still working their way back from a GB training camp in France it was the non-speedway classes that took centre stage on a dry track that was really suited to them. Sixteen riders competed in the Flat Track class whilst eleven raced in the ever-growing pit bike class. Both were produced some first class racing whilst both new classes, for the road bikes and quads, proved popular with those that came. Afterwards the driving force behind the Road Bike class introduction, Jon Lawson from North Yorkshire, declared the day an over-whelming success.

“It was great for the club to give us a chance to race today. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and there were a few who came along to watch who are now planning to compete at the next meeting. Mablethorpe Beach racing has finished for the summer and this class is ideally suited to most who ride there during the winter. Scunthorpe are committed to including us and the quads as part of their six round Summer Championship so the class is being given a chance to grow”.

For the record the five winter series titles handed out were to Skye Adams (Flat Track), Lee Carter (Pit Bikes), Kyle Bickley (Youth 500), Harry McGurk (Youth 125/150) and Teddy Wilkinson (Junior 110) whilst four more (for the Open, Support, Novice and Upright classes) will be awarded this weekend.

The summer meetings, for all twelve classes, will take place on Sunday 1st May, Saturday 21st May, Saturday 18th June, Sunday 24th July, Sunday 28th August and Sunday 25th September and it should be noted that it is free for people to spectate at all amateur meetings.

Of course the club is always looking for volunteers to help keep the meetings running and anyone who can help out on race day, or who wants to book a place to ride, should, in the first instance, text Richard Hollingsworth on 07832-402167.
