The last two Sundays at Scunthorpe Speedway’s Eddie Wright Raceway have seen the club’s eighth winter series kick off in style. Sunday 15th November saw a strong Open Class field take to the track with new Newcastle Diamond Danny Phillips claiming victory over King’s Lynn’s Josh Bailey, Birmingham’s British Youth Champion Jack Parkinson-Blackburn and Coventry’s Jamie Halder in the A Final. 15-year old Parkinson had gone through qualifying unbeaten but missed the gate in the final and had to settle for third place on his debut in the adult classes.

In the Support Class it was Mick Skinner who raced to victory from Chris Bambury and Jamie Fenn-Smith whilst it was an Australian rider, Dan Harrison, who headed home Damon Hall and David Chiles on his debut at the track in the Novice Class. The fourth and final class of the day was for the, typically vintage, upright engines and Lee Coleman claimed victory ahead of Dave Harvey and Ed Gooch.

Then last Sunday (22nd November) it was the second attempt at running the first round for the Flat Track, Pit Bike and youth speedway classes. Rain a fortnight earlier had meant the meeting was called off the night before and rescheduled into a rare gap in the track’s racing calendar.

The largest class saw ten pit bike riders compete with Summer Championship winner Lee Carter claiming victory from Craig Smith and Jamie Halder. The Flat Track class was won by Tom Amos from Skye Adams and Storm Stacey whilst the largest youth speedway class, the 125/150cc class, saw newly crowned Dutch 125cc Champion Harry McGurk from Bradford win the round. Filling the podium were Mickie Simpson and Luke Harrison after Jordan Palin crashed out in the first running of the final.

In the Youth 500 class Kyle Bickley won after receiving clearance from the BSPA to compete at the level three months before his 14th birthday. Second was Eryk Borczuch and third was Kean Dicken. Jordan Palin decided to give the Youth 250 class a miss after taking one ride on his own whilst Teddy Wilkinson defeated Lewis Towle in their Junior 110 head-to-head.

After the second meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth declared his delight at the turnout. “Considering it is November to get over sixty riders over the two meetings has been great. A few riders take a break when the season ends but then as the new season approaches numbers build up. Both meetings went well and I’m looking forward to next ones in December. We could certainly do with some more people to help us run the meetings and anyone interested, or anyone who wants to ride in the meetings, can text me on 07832-402167”.
