Summer Championship goes from strength to strength

With over ninety riders taking part in 101 races at the Eddie Wright Raceway in Scunthorpe last Sunday their Summer Championship goes from strength to strength. A heavy downpour an hour before the start delayed the start a little but the track quickly dried to produce some great racing. In the flagship Open Class it was Stoke Potters’ Danny Phillips who defeated Birmingham’s Sam Chapman, 15-year old prospect Eryk Borczuch and veteran racer Ricky Scarboro in in the Open Class A Final whilst there were class wins for George Rothery (Support), Lewis Millar (Novice), Gary O’Hare (Upright), Tom Woolley (Flat Track), Kean Dicken (Youth 500), Jolyon West (Youth 125), Toby Hales (Youth Senior Flat Track), Joe Burden (Youth Inter Flat Track), George Hopper (Juniors) and Leah Tokelove (Adult Pit Bikes).

Unfortunately a couple of Open Class riders left when the rain came down because they didn’t realise how quickly the Scunthorpe track can dry. After the meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth said “It was a shame they left because there was a dry line after ten races so it would probably have only affected their first ride. I have to thank Graham Trollope and John Priestley for pumping the water off to ensure we could start not long after 11am. It meant we could complete the full schedule of races and, as always, really try and give riders value for money.

“Of course as always we have to thank our volunteers who did such an amazing job. They really care about the club and what it does for British speedway. Without them this club just wouldn’t survive. This Summer Championship is now in its’ eighth year and it’s probably more than a coincidence that the club have also been in the Premier League for that long.

“On the track we keep attracting new riders in the Novice Class. We had 14 in the class today and most of them are in their first season of competitive speedway whilst 5 of the eight riders in the Support Class are teenagers and six of the eight have advanced through the Novice Class. Then in the Open Class we’ve got Eryk Borczuch and Jamie Halder now competing with the big guns and following in the tracks of Danny Phillips who has now won four meetings and the last two this summer.

“The Flat Track and Pit Bike Classes are also gradually building up in numbers which is really nice to see. Even to the untrained eye it is obvious that there is some quality young talent coming through the youth flat track scene and the word regarding the pit bikes is finally spreading. I’ve got to thank Adam Waller from the DTRA for his help in spreading the word and organising today’s races. He and his wife did a great job organising the grids and the team event. Unfortunately there was a bit of confusion regarding the integration of the youth flat track races but that was largely my fault. I’m sure we’ve learnt from it and I’m very keen for us to do it again next year and show we can do it even better.

“Another lesson I’ve learnt is that we shouldn’t run the same weekend as the British Veterans Championship as we were down on numbers in the upright class. I now know they run the weekend after the Cardiff SGP so we’ll avoid that weekend next year. Our next round is on Sunday 23rd August and then we finish the Summer Championship on 4th October”.

Places can be reserved in the next meeting by texting Richard Hollingsworth on 07832-402167 whilst the next speedway action at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway is this Friday when the Scunthorpe Scorpions take on the Plymouth Devils in the Premier League (24th July, 7.30pm) followed by Midland Development League action between the Scunthorpe Stags and Milton Keynes Knights.
