Skye the star of Ladies Day
A second female trophy winner was Californian speedway racer Hayley Perrault who had travelled half way round the world to race in Europe. In what she described as “my biggest event for the entire tour” she won the Support Class ‘B’ Final before claiming third place in the ‘A’ Final behind another international rider, Bulgarian Stoian Stoianov, and Mark Whitehead. Ben Hewitt, who had looked the favourite in the class after an engine failure robbed him of a five ride maximum during qualifying, fell whilst in second place.
In the Open Class it was the Stoke Potters Danny Phillips who secured victory whilst veteran Pole Miroslaw Daniszewski nipped through on the inside of Mildenhall’s Tom Bacon on the last bend to claim second place. Another veteran rider, Ricky Scarboro, made up the ‘A’ Final whilst it was a 51-year old, Gary O’Hare, who won the Upright Class with a faultless five-ride maximum. Behind him relative youngsters, Shaun Bickley and Lee Coleman, filled the remaining podium positions.
In the Novice Class it was Scarboro junior, Kurtis, who won the ‘A’ Final ahead of Tim Antill, Jake Isherwood and debutant Andrew Sturrock whilst in the other open age class it was Simon Ellis who headed home Adam Waller and Lee Carter in the Adult Pit Bikes.
In the four youth classes there were a number of records broken. The 500cc class saw Jack Parkinson-Blackburn take his ninth victory in the class and took his total to record sixteen in total (two at 250cc and 5 at 125/150cc). He headed home Kieran Douglas and Sam Chapman whilst Kyle Bickley took his total to twelve class wins with his fifth at 250cc level (following seven at 125/150cc level). However, credit must go to Harry McGurk who battled hard on his smaller engine machine (175cc) and made considerable improvements as the session went on. Sadly he was less successful in the afternoon when mechanical troubles meant he only finished one race in the 125/150cc class. Dominating the class once again was Jolyon West with his seventh class win ahead of the every-improving Jordan Palin, Sam McGurk and Mickie Simpson whilst in the Junior 110 class it was George Hopper who won a thrilling three-way battle ahead of Joe Burden and Bailey Fellows.
After the Meeting a delighted Promoter Rob Godfrey declared “Once again it was a great day’s racing and once again we made a good call with the weather. We take great pride in not calling off meetings on the day because there is nothing worse than people travelling unnecessarily only to find an unusable track or having it called off when they are half way here.
“People set aside the time to ride and spend a lot of money filling up their fuel tanks to get to these meetings. The least they can expect, once they have travelled, is to be able to race on a decent track. You can never say never but we do believe that weather forecasts should allow us to make a decision the night before and then we stick to it. Occasionally we might have been able to get a meeting on in borderline conditions when we have cancelled but we would prefer that to cancelling on the day of the meeting.
“Signing on starts at 9.30am so we’d have to be having a track inspection at 5am and with some travelling the previous evening it just seems best to make a decision around tea time the night before. Hopefully everyone knows where they stand with that and it allowed over 70 riders to travel in confidence knowing they would be racing in reasonable conditions.
“As always we have to thank all the volunteers who help us run these. They are the life blood of this sport and, in particular, this club. However, we can’t always rely on the same few so if there are any riders or fans who appreciate these meetings then it would be great if they could get in touch with Richard and offer their help for half a meeting from time to time”.
The next meeting is on Sunday 12th July and is set to also include a youth round of the Dirt Track Riders’ Association Flat Track Championship and, although talks are in an early stage, there may be some involvement from some Danish touring riders.
Places can be reserved in the meeting by texting Richard Hollingsworth on 07832-402167 whilst further rounds of the Summer Championship will also take place on 23rd August and 4th October.
The next speedway action at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway is this Friday when the Scunthorpe Scorpions take on the Newcastle Diamonds in the Premier League Knockout Cup (5th June, 7.30pm).
