SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 53 NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS 37 (LEAGUE CUP)

FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, registered their first win of the season, with a fine 53-37 League Cup victory over the Newcastle Diamonds at the Eddie Wright Raceway last night (Friday).

In a night of some absorbing action, the Scorpions led throughout the meeting, and eventually clinched the win with a 5-1 from David Howe (putting in a revitalised performance after returning to his 2014 silencer set-up) and Josh Auty in Heat 13.

Scorpions’ team manager Dave Peet said: “I’d delighted and relieved to get our first win. We knew it was going to come, but we just wanted it sooner rather than later.

“We’ve said all along the lads only needed to get a few laps under their belts, and that’s proven to be true.

“I offered Heat 15 to both Alex Davies and Theo Pijper, but both wanted to finish their nights on a high, which is fair enough, so David and Josh went out instead. The top five scored so solidly, I could have put any of them in Heat 15.

“Of our two reserves, Nike Lunna produced a fantastic ride to grab a win at the death in Heat 2, while Ellis Perks has the speed and is picking more experience all the time. Ellis said a big thank you to Carl Wilkinson, after Wilko shepherded him home to second place in Heat 14.”

SCUNTHORPE 53: David Howe 12, Josh Auty 10+2, Theo Pijper 8+2, Carl Wilkinson 8+1, Alex Davies 7+2, Nike Lunna 5+1, Ellis Perks 3.
NEWCASTLE 37: Anton Rosen 12+1, Lewis Kerr 7+2, Christian Henry 7, Ludvig Lindgren 6, Lewis Rose 5, Simon Nielsen 0, Steve Worrall 0.

* A fuller report, with more reaction, will follow in due course.

* The Scorpions move onto Berwick for their opening Premier League fixture tonight (Saturday, 7pm).
