Scorpions looking for opening win
FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, are out to take their first win of the 2015 season, in a League Cup clash against the Newcastle Diamonds at the Eddie Wright Raceway tonight (Friday, 7.30pm).
The Scorpions looked much more competitive at Redcar yesterday evening (Thursday). Although they eventually slipped to a 40-53 defeat, Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey was encouraged by much of what he saw.
Godfrey said: “I’m more and more convinced that we’ve got together a really good side this season. There is so much potential amongst this team.
“The last few years we’ve tracked largely the same side, it’s been the same old, same old. This year, we’ve gone for something a bit different, so it was always going to take the team a few meetings to settle in.
“We always tend to be very slow starters in any case.
“Yesterday at Redcar, Nike Lunna took his first-ever paid win for the Scorpions, Alex Davies looked much more competitive, while Theo Pijper (pictured) seems to have now got his bikes sorted out.
“We had a team chat during the meeting at Redcar, and after that, we pulled them right back. I know the whole team is going to be really up for it against Newcastle tonight.
“I think the visit of the Diamonds to the Eddie Wright Raceway tonight is going to provide a cracking meeting – it’s going to be top entertainment. And we really want to get that first win under our belts
“It’s all coming together, and we will be ready for the start of our league matches at Berwick tomorrow (Saturday).”
There is also a second half tonight, with the Scunthorpe Stags facing the Stoke Spitfires in a Midland Development League clash.
