Scunthorpe Speedway issue open invitation to Sky Sports

SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey has issued an open invitation towards the Sky Sports television cameras filming a meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2015.

Sky Sports show Elite League racing on a regular basis, as well as the occasional Premier League meeting during the season.

“There’s a few reasons why I think the time is right for the Sky Sports cameras to return to the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2015”, said Godfrey.

“The first one is simple. I think we have the best racetrack in the Premier League. That’s not just me saying that. We’ve won the Premier League racetrack of the year three times over the last five seasons – in 2010, in 2012 and again last season (2014).

“Also, we’ve put together what I believe is a highly entertaining 1-to-7 for the forthcoming season; the Scunthorpe Scorpions of 2015 are racers.

“Plus we’ve put in a lot of work during the winter regarding stadium improvements. The pits area have been tarmacked, we’ve put up a new tea room, and I’d like to show off the place.”

Godfrey is also willing to be flexible on dates.

“We’re lucky in that we own our stadium”, he explains. “I can accommodate the Sky TV cameras on any weekday from Monday to Friday.”

Sky Sports have televised two previous meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway, in 2009 and 2013. In May 2009, Scunthorpe Scorpions defeated Sheffield Tigers by 57-38, while in April 2013, the Scorpions were held to a 45-45 draw by Workington Comets.

Both televised meetings received rave reviews.

Godfrey added: “The Sky team seem to love coming here.

“Both Chris Louis and Gary Havelock have compared our track favourably to Bydgoszcz in Poland, while Nigel Pearson is always very keen to return here. He said he’d like to be here every week. We appreciate he’s a busy man, but he’s welcome any time, and a Sky meeting would give him the perfect excuse to come back again.

“In short, we’d love Sky back. They know they will always be made very welcome here.”
