AWilson DPhillips LDickenCradley Heathen, Danny Phillip took the honours on Sunday afternoon in a highly competitive amateur meeting at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway. He defeated rising star Alex Wilson, veteran Lee Dicken and Kent Kings Rider of the Year Danny Ayres in the ‘A’ Final but there was quality throughout the 13-rider field. Zach Wajtknecht, Luke Harris and Krystian Bialecki missed out to Ayres in the ‘B’ Final whilst Sam Woods, Robert Parker, Danyon Hume, Tom Woolley, Michael Neale and Arron Mogridge also competed in the last meeting before the festive season.

With excellent weather for the time of year the meeting once again saw close to eighty entrants and ninety-five races were completed. The morning session saw six classes competed for:

Eryk Borczuch defeated Jack Parkinson-Blackburn in the Youth 500 class ‘A’ Final whilst Jamie Halder claimed third in his first meeting on a 500cc bike.

Kyle Bickley came back from scoring just two points in his first three rides to win his last qualifying ride and defeat Jordan Jenkins in the the ‘A’ final in the Youth 250s. Both Luke Woodhull and his twin brother, Luke, crashed out of the ‘A’ Final in separate incidents but thankfully the air fence did its job and they were able to walk away.

Jolyon West won his second successive 125/150cc round whilst Harry McGurk and Jordan Palin filled the podium positions after Leon Flint crashed out on the last lap.

Peter Jordan and Mike Johnson took advantage of their more controlled approach in the Flat Track Class to racing as Ben Wells had to settle for third place after winning three of the five races but crashing out of two others

Lee Carter edged out Jeff Carter by one point in the Pit Bike Class whilst George Hopper completed a five ride maximum in the popular Junior Class ahead of Leon Collier

After a short break the four adult speedway classes took to the track around 2.30pm and continued under floodlights until 6pm. Along with the excellent Open Class there was a win for Jamie Halder in the 12-rider Support Class. He defeated Ryan Kinsley, Mark Whitehead and George Rothery in the ‘A’ Final which wasn’t a bad effort for a 15-year old who only earlier in the day had raced his 500cc bike for the first time.

The combined Novice Class and Upright Class final saw David Morgan defeat brothers Craig and Mike out whilst Dave Harvey, racing with Glen Belcher in the inaugural Upright Class meeting at Scunthorpe, split the brother for third place. Second place Craig Hancock was the real surprise in the final because after two falls, one retirement and a non-start in his four qualifying rides he strung four great rides together to win the ‘D’, ‘C’ and ‘B’ finals before just missing out on the top prize.

At the end of the day meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth confirmed it had been a huge success “It ran so well. We had extra volunteers today and it just helped speed things along. The morning took less than three hours to run and the afternoon about three and a half hours. In December that makes it manageable and I’d like to thank all the volunteers, but especially the new ones who took the plunge to come and join us. It was really appreciated and makes such a big difference.

“Next round we will be splitting the classes out over two days and that should make it even more fun for everyone involved. The standard of the classes was excellent today but now we can welcome even more riders without fear of the meetings dragging on. The next meeting is the Christmas Cracker on Saturday 27th December. It starts at 11am and will include the youth speedway classes along with the flat track and pit bike classes. The old Christmas Cracker Flat Track meeting that Peter Boast used to arrange was a huge success and a great time out after the Christmas festivities. Hopefully we can replicate something like that.

“Then the following weekend, on Sunday 4th January, we have the adult speedway classes race in the New Year Classic meeting and over the last few years there has been high demand from National League riders, and one or two higher league ones, to get back on track. Both meetings start at 11am and are free to enter so hopefully we’ll get a good turnout of spectators too”.
