Despite the final round being washed out Scunthorpe Speedway still managed to attract 114 different riders to the four rounds of their 2014 Summer Championship that survived the weather. For the first time in it seven years two rounds of the championship were lost to the weather but it didn’t prevent the 2011 champion, 48-year old former Polish Ekstraliga rider Miroslaw Daniszewski from claiming his second title ahead of Andrew Blackburn and three-time champion Gary O’Hare.

With a rider’s top three round scores counting Daniszewski’s two first place and one second place put him six points ahead of the field. In the other adult classes Sam Darroch pipped Robert Parker to the Support Class title whilst rookie rider Lloyd Brown claimed the Novice Class title ahead of Damon Hall and John Gaskell.

There were also three youth titles with Jack Parkinson-Blackburn following in the footsteps of pro riders Marc Owen, Robert Lambert and Josh Bates in the 250cc class. 2013 winner Kean Dicken was second but had the consolation of edging out Jamie Halder and Jordan Palin in the Youth 150cc class whilst Jacob Fellows edged out Keiran Holt in the Junior 110cc pit bike class.

Despite the two rain-offs organiser Richard Hollingsworth was delighted with how the summer meetings had gone. “It was a bit of a shame to lose the last meeting of the summer. We’d only lost three meetings in six previous summer championships but we ended up with two this summer. However, we saw some great racing and whilst the Open Class numbers have been hit by the success of the MDL the number of new riders has been very high. The future looks bright with a number of promising riders riding in our Support and Novice classes.

“The good news is we don’t stop during the closed season and we’ve got all manner of practices, training schools and meetings over the winter. All the details are on our website whilst the first amateur meeting is on 9th November. The winter meetings are very popular but we split them into two halves to make sure riders aren’t waiting around too long. Let’s just hope the weather is kind to us”.

The other Winter Series dates, after 9th November, are 7h December, 4th January, 1st February and 1st March.
