Season finale at the Eddie Wright Raceway
SCUNTHORPE’S Eddie Wright Raceway stages its final speedway fixture of the year on Sunday (please note start-time of 5pm), with a double-header featuring both the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions and Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Stags.
The Scorpions host local rivals Sheffield Tigers in a Premier League encounter, while the Stags entertain the Buxton Hitmen in a National League match.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It’s one last chance for fans to come along and see some speedway action at the Eddie Wright Raceway, before the long break for the winter months.
“We’ve had the local bragging rights over Sheffield this year with three wins at their track, but they’ll be after getting their own back on Sunday.
“We’ll also be honouring the legendary Kenny Smith (pictured), our former team manager and co-promoter, who did so much for the Scorpions in our first few years at the Eddie Wright Raceway before cancer took him away from us in 2009.
“The winner of Heat 15 of our match against the Tigers will win receive the Kenny Smith Memorial Shield for 12 months.”
The Stags continued their improved form with a 40-51 loss at Buxton on Sunday, having narrowly lost 41-48 to Stoke at the Eddie Wright Raceway on August 31. They go into Sunday chasing their first victory of the season.
“The National League match between the Stags and the Buxton Hitmen promises to be an absolute belter”, Godfrey enthused.
“I was delighted to see just how much the young riders of the Stags had improved in their last home meeting against Stoke. And although I wasn’t able to make it to Buxton on Sunday, I’ve heard very positive reports on the team’s performance in that meeting as well.
“It would be absolutely fantastic if the Stags could finish the season with a win against Buxton.”
