The future gets brighter

Whilst seasoned pros Miroslaw Daniszewski and Gary O’Hare duelled it out in the Open Class it was the Novice class that held centre stage at the fourth round of Scunthorpe Speedway’s Summer Championship on Saturday. Meeting organiser and Scunthorpe Stags’ National League Team Manager Richard Hollingsworth confirmed the 20-rider line-up was the largest since the meetings started in 2008 and that several riders showed real potential.

“It is great to see how much talent is coming through; both in the Novice ranks and in the Youth 150 class. There are several riders in the Novice Class who now need to step up into the Support Class whilst we are getting quite a few youngsters come after learning either on our training track with Wayne Carter or up at the Northside training track in Workington.

“I really am optimistic about the future of British speedway but promoters need to change the rules so there are more opportunities for British riders to ride in all the leagues. If they make those changes I’m sure there will be a swift change in the sport’s fortunes and lots more youngsters taking up the sport.

“I am quite fed up of hearing some promoters saying there are not enough British riders to go around because it is patently untrue. I came up with a list of around twenty British riders who are more than capable of riding in the Elite League, a similar number of riders who should have Premier League places and double that many riders who should be able to gain places in the National League. I’m not expecting every rider to gain a place but it just shows that there would be competition for places should the Elite League have a three-British rider minimum, the Premier League take over the Fast Track reserve programme and the National League ensure that they always have two rookie riders in their teams.

“I guess people wonder what this has to do with an amateur meeting but if people could see the talent that gets wasted in this sport through lack of opportunities then perhaps they would understand my frustration”.

For the record Saturday’s meeting saw 50 riders race 82 heats in eight classes. The winner of the Novice Class was Danyon Hume who led home Thomas Hewitt, Lloyd Brown and Matthew Sewell. Sewell had gone unbeaten in qualifying but fell in the final whilst the other class winners were Robert Parker (Support), Jamie Halder (Youth 150), Sam Chapman (Youth 500), Jacob Fellows (Junior Pit Bikes), Colin Willerton (Adult Pit Bikes) and George Pickering (Flat Track).

The final round of the Summer Championship is on Saturday 4th October whilst the Winter Series dates have been announced as 9th November, 7th December, 4h January, 1st February and 1st March.
