Scorpions just miss out on point at Workington
WORKINGTON COMETS 49 SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 41 (PREMIER LEAGUE)
FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions just missed out on a Premier League point in a 41-49 defeat at Workington last night (Saturday).
The Scorpions needed a 4-2 or 5-1 from Heat 15 to pick up a point for losing an away match by six points or less.
Although Josh Auty came from third to first in fine style to complete a fine personal performance, the Comets duo of Josh Grajczonek and Kyle Howarth kept Thomas Jorgensen in fourth place.
Auty (13) and David Howe (12) were the star performers for the Scorpions, but they were hampered by three riders scoring just three points between them.
Scorpions’ team manager Dave Peet said: “I guess it was disappointing to just miss out on a point. But to be honest, it was like trying to push water uphill all night, because we were only firing on four cylinders.
“It was a tough ask riding in the second half of a double-header. Workington had already had 15 heats riding against Rye House, so they were already dialled into track conditions.
“Josh Auty was awesome – he was a man on a mission.
“Josh had been plagued with bike problems all season. He’d found what was wrong with his bike one meeting before he had to take an enforced break, due to the removal of his appendix.
“He’s now flying. The big positive in this meeting was just how well Josh rode.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of Benji Compton, our guest for the night, who came in and really gave it a go. He deserved more points for his efforts.
“We’ve now got to make sure we get the three points off Workington in the return fixture at the Eddie Wright Raceway this afternoon (Sunday, 3pm). We’ve got to set about our business and deliver a performance.”
