Klindt in for the season
DYNAMIC, Dashing Dane Nicolai Klindt is set to ride for the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions for the rest of the 2014 season.
Initially signed as a 28-day replacement for the injured Anders Mellgren, Klindt has been in great form for the Scorpions, averaging 9.47 in six appearances, to take over the No 1 spot at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
In addition, he has been in sensational form in the World Championship qualifiers, and is now just five rides away from a place in the 2015 Grand Prix series.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We’ve done a deal for Nicolai to ride for us for the rest of the year.
“It was a no brainer, really, the way he’s been riding for us. He is a quality act and been scoring double figures in every meeting.
“There’s no doubt his introduction into the team went a long way to helping kick-start our season after an inconsistent start.
“It’s all worked out very well for Nicolai. He’s also just signed as a doubling-up rider for Elite League Leicester. His home meetings will now slot together, at Scunthorpe on a Friday and then at Leicester on a Saturday.
“We get priority on any fixture clashes, although we will be without Nicolai when we travel to Glasgow on Monday, July 14 (the new date for that meeting), because Leicester are involved in a fixture covered by Sky Sports that day, and there is an agreement in such cases, that the rider competes in the TV fixture.
“I think the majority of his meetings for the remainder of the season will be in the UK. His Danish commitments start to slow down a little, I think he’s got around seven of those left this year.”
Meanwhile, Mellgren has recently returned to action in Sweden. The Swede suffered a fracture in his spine in a crash while riding for Scunthorpe at Redcar in April.
A maximum in a National League standard meeting at Nassjo was followed by a zero in a Swedish Elite League match.
Scunthorpe have the Swede on loan for the season from Rye House. The options, once he is fully fit, is to fit him back into the team or sub-loan him out to another club.
Godfrey said: “It will be a few weeks before Anders is fully up to speed. He’s just started on the comeback trail.
“We’ll continue to assess the situation, but we’re in no rush. Once Anders declares himself fully fit, we’ll make the decision that is in the best interests of Scunthorpe speedway, especially as I feel we’re in with a shout of taking league honours this season.
“A fit Anders gives us options, but whether we take that option or not remains to be seen”, Godfrey concluded.
The Scorpions are currently in a very positive frame of mind, following an excellent 55-38 home win over Ipswich last Friday, that saw the team firing on all seven cylinders.
The team are involved in home and away meetings against Newcastle Diamonds this weekend, commencing with the clash at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), before the action moves to Brough Park on Sunday.
