AUSTRALIAN Alex Davies was on Cloud Nine, after top scoring for the Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions in their 48-41 League Cup victory at Ipswich on Thursday evening – a fantastic start to the new season for the club.

Davies scored 13 points from 5 rides, including a hugely impressive win over Great Britain international Danny King in Heat 10.

He also took the second place in Heat 15, behind King, that clinched an extra fourth point for the Scorpions, awarded for away wins of seven points or more.

Davies remained in the UK during the winter months, and the Northampton-born racer has no pressure on his shoulders this season after a successful application means he is now visa-less.

He said: “It couldn’t have been a better start for us than the meeting at Ipswich.

“Every single one of us was keen to get going and to get out there winning races. You can’t do any better than starting the season by gaining all the points from your first away meeting.

“The whole team performed from top to bottom – everyone went out and did their job. For example, Josh Bailey far from disgraced himself on his debut for the club. It’s a big step for him (from the National League), and fair play, he went out in his opening ride and did it.

“Ipswich isn’t the easiest track to ride, so if can score a win there, the sky is the limit for us this season.

“If anyone goes through the records, then they’ll see Ipswich has been a track that I’ve never quite got to grips with before. When I saw it come up at the top of our fixture list, I was dreading the first meeting.

“But I decided to go along to the meeting with an open mind, tried a different engine, and it definitely paid dividends.”

Davies finished the 2015 season with a fine run of form, often heading the team’s scorechart.

“I felt a bit of pressure to pick up from where I left off at the end of last season”, he explained.

“But I didn’t think about that too much. The meeting definitely went the way I was hoping and I was really pleased with my performance.

“I’d like to thank everyone who helped out, in particular Ashley Holloway and Stephen Burnside.”
