WS JParkinsonBlackburn JBailey DBewleyHenderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions’ new reserve signing, Josh Bailey, has won the Scunthorpe Speedway Winter Series to be awarded the Kenny Smith Memorial Shield.  On Sunday afternoon he finished second to Oliver Greenwood in the Open Class to claim his third runners-up position of the winter. In one on the strongest fields for an amateur meeting there was a whole host of Premier League and National League riders getting some valuable competitive practice ahead of the season.  Scorpions’ heat leader Ryan Douglas was one and he claimed a fifteen point maximum in qualifying before withdrawing from the finals.

Teenage stars Dan Bewley of Belle Vue, Birmingham’s Jack Parkinson-Blackburn and Bailey headed a number of more experienced riders to go straight into the ‘A’ Final whilst Greenwood joined them by winning the ‘B’ Final.  In the ‘A’ Final Greenwood once again raced away from the tape to win a record-breaking eighth meeting at Scunthorpe but Bailey secured the Winter Series by defeating Parkinson-Blackburn.

In the other three classes the final round winner was also the Winter Series champion.  In the Support Class it was Mick Skinner, in Novices it was Stuart Freeman and in the Upright Class Gary O’Hare extended his winning streak.

After the meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth declared the Winter Series a huge success.  “We’ve been really blessed with the weather this winter and it’s great that we’ve had such a good turnout for the first winter series in honour of the late, great Kenny Smith.  We’ve managed to get ten meetings on and had some great days.  I’m sure Kenny would have been very proud.  However, today was spoiled with a couple of nasty injuries.  Our thoughts are with both Sam Darroch and Stoian Stoianov.  They are both regulars with us and is upsetting to see them both going to hospital.  We wish them, and Chris Hay who had a less serious injury, a very speedy recovery.

“I must thank riders and volunteers for their patience as we dealt with the injured riders and for sticking around to finish the meeting.  Thankfully the weather was really kind to us and it didn’t become an ordeal.  Now it’s time for the Scorpions to take centre stage and our team of amazing volunteers can take a well-earned break.

“We start the 9th Summer Championship on 1st May and have six meetings through to the end of September.  I’m sure the warmer weather will bring lots of different riders out and hopefully we can continue to grow these meetings which are such an important income stream for the club”.

The six Summer Championship meetings will include all 12 classes split in two halves.  The exact split will be decided shortly but they are set for 1st May, 21st May, 18th June, 24th July, 28th August and 25th September.

Any riders wanting to enter future meetings or anyone wanting to lend a hand running the meetings should text Richard Hollingsworth in the first instance on 07832-402167.
