Rob Godfrey: “I’d love to have Sky back in 2016”
HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions’ promoter Rob Godfrey has admitted that he would love for Sky Sports to return to the Eddie Wright Raceway for a third time, following previous televised meetings in 2009 and 2013.
Sky Sports show Elite League racing on a regular basis, as well as the occasional Premier League meeting during the season.
Godfrey says: “It would be fantastic if the Sky Sports cameras returned to Scunthorpe for a third time, during the 2016 season.
“It’s blowing our own trumpet, but there isn’t a better racetrack in the length and breadth of the country than the Eddie Wright Raceway.
“There’s a nine in ten chance that if the Sky cameras come to us, that they’ll catch a humdinger of a Premier League meeting, especially as we’ve put together a team of racers for this year.”
Scunthorpe Speedway own their stadium, and therefore can be flexible on dates, when it comes to accommodating a Sky TV fixture.
Sky Sports have televised two previous meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway. In May 2009, Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions defeated Sheffield Tigers by 57-38, while in April 2013, the Scorpions were held to a 45-45 draw by Workington Comets.
Both televised meetings received rave reviews.
Godfrey comments: “Both Chris Louis and Gary Havelock enthused about our track in previous televised visits, while Nigel Pearson is always very keen to return here.
“We appreciate Nigel is a busy man, but he’s welcome along to Scunthorpe Speedway any time, and a Sky meeting would give him the perfect excuse to come back again.
“In short, we’d love Sky back. They know they will always be made very welcome at Scunthorpe.”
