THE final round of Scunthorpe Speedway’s 8th Summer Championship took place on Sunday 4th October, with over sixty riders competing in more than eighty races. In breathless conditions, it was a glorious conclusion to the series which saw a record of 146 different riders compete over the five round series.

The Open Class title had been won with a round to spare by Miroslaw Daniszewski but it didn’t stop the veteran Pole from battling hard to see off a small, but highly competitive, field to claim his seventh ever round win. Behind him former Premier League star Lee Dicken, National League newbie Jamie Halder and the young Scarborough-based Pole Krystian Bialecki had to be content with the minor places in the ‘A’ Final.

In the Support Class it was Stoian Stoianov who claimed both the round and the Summer Championship whilst his winning times in heats 4 (60.7) and 29 (61.8) show he is more than ready to make the step up to ride in the Open Class. He defeated MDL riders Sam Chapman and Sam Woolley along with Mark Whitehead in the ‘A’ Final. Other classes competed for during the first half of the meeting saw Kyle Bickley see off Kean Dicken and Jordan Palin in the Youth 250 class, Stephanie Tovey defeat Luke Harrison and her brother Thomas in the Junior 110 class (although Luke Harrison did manage to win the Summer Championship) and Flat Track debutant Damian McCann lead an impressive 12-rider field from Joe Burden and Peter Jordan. Despite two start rows he finished in the top four of all six races to win by five points whilst Mike Johnson claimed the Summer Championship title.

In the afternoon four more classes took to the track. In the Novice Class it was lucky that Tim Antill already had the championship in the bag because an injury prevented him from riding. The three riders he had headed home in the fourth round ‘A’ Final once again made their way to final race. David Brayshaw once again won all his qualifying rides but this time continued his dominance by racing to victory rather than having to settle for third-place. It meant Andy Humphries had to once again settle for second place whilst Francesca Kirtley-Paine again missed out on the podium. After defeating Kevin Wallace when they met in qualifying it was the Cumbrian who has the last laugh with third place in the final. However, Kirtley-Paine was still grinning from ear-to-ear when she learnt that her excellent exploits had earned her the championship runners-up trophy.

Jolyon West looked like he might be set for another clean sweep in the Youth 125/150 Class but ‘touching the tapes’ in the final is an automatic exclusion from the race (as gate positions are picked by the riders which makes the option of going from the 15 metre mark on gate four an unfair). Thankfully he had already won the Summer Championship but had to be content with seeing Jordan Palin, Harry McGurk and Corban Pavitt pick up the round trophies.

In the Upright Class Gary O’Hare made it 30 race wins out 30 to win both the round and the inaugural Summer Championship whilst Lee Coleman and Shaun Bickley claimed the other podium positions in both. Finally, in the Pit Bike class it was George Hopper who headed home Summer Champion Lee Carter and Thomas Tovey managed to tie his sister Stephanie for third place.

After the meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth declared the meeting a huge success.

He said: “When we run that many races and you don’t need the paramedic to tend to anyone it has to be a great day doesn’t it? It is fantastic to see the turnouts in some of the newer classes. It just shows that we were right to give the Uprights, Flat Track and Pit Bikes their own Summer Championships. For long enough we were getting dribs and drabs of flat trackers but it’s great to see a dozen riders turn up today and have a great day. We’ve not had less than nine entrants to any round and it’ll be amazing if we can increase the numbers next year and make it an ever more impressive affair.

“Of course I should thank all the volunteers who helped us today. We had a few more than usual and it really made the day so much less stressful. Their help is amazing and if every rider, or someone from their family, does half a summer round meeting or a winter one each year we’d be laughing. We’re onto the Winter Series meetings in November and we will continue to split the classes over two weekends so the meetings don’t go on too long. We have lights but when it gets dark it also gets cold and that’s no good for anyone. Hopefully with around forty riders in each meeting we’ll keep them running along nicely and make them great fun to be involved in; be it as a rider or volunteer.

“First up will be the youth speedway classes (150cc, 250cc, 500cc) along with flat track, pit bikes and Junior 110cc classes on Sunday 8th November (start time 11am) and then a week later the adult speedway classes (Open, Support, Novice and Upright) take to the track seven days later (15th November 11am). I’m taking bookings so anyone who wants to ride in them please just get in touch”.
