Scorpions out to win Bank Holiday derby
FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, can lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table with a victory over local rivals Sheffield Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway this afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday, 3pm).
In a massive 38-heat Bank Holiday double header feast of action, the Midland Development League Riders’ Championship completes the action.
Redcar Bears lost twice to Sheffield on Thursday and Friday, and, as a result, the Scorpions can leapfrog the Bears with a victory over Sheffield this afternoon, and still have two matches in hand on their rivals at the bottom end of the table.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “There’s so much on offer this afternoon. It’s the best value meeting of the year, with 38 heats for just £17 for adults, while all accompanied children under the age of 16 will be admitted free due to our offer which lasts to the end of the season.
“There’s also a chance to see our new signing Leigh Lanham’s debut for the Scorpions; while Sheffield bring in a new face in Robin Aspegren and recall a club legend in Andre Compton.
“We can get off the bottom of the Premier League with a win, while it’s also an important meeting for Sheffield, because they could lift themselves up to second with a victory, which could be important come the play-offs.
“But there’s also local bragging rights going into the winter. This is the last Scunthorpe vs Sheffield meeting of 2015, and both clubs will also want to get one over their local rivals. It promises to be a cracker.”
The Scunthorpe management plan to beat the rain which fans will wake up to this morning.
Godfrey explains: “We packed the track in hard yesterday. We are expecting the rain to clear by dinner time, to give us sufficient time to get the circuit into racing trim by 3pm.”
