ROB GODFREY, the promoter of the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, was delighted by the debut of new 17-year-old Dane Andreas Lyager in the 49-44 victory over Berwick at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening.

Lyager won Heat 3 ahead of team-mate Carl Wilkinson and the Bandits pair of Thomas Jorgensen and Matthias Thornblom, and ended the night with half a dozen points to his name.

“That wasn’t part of the script!”, exclaims Godfrey. “I was delighted Andreas rode so well, winning his first-ever race at the Eddie Wright Raceway – those really were his first four laps around our track as well, he hadn’t had a chance to practice – and scoring six points.

“The lad can trap, which is a good thing, and he’s obviously got talent. It was a hugely encouraging debut from him.

“We all suspected when we brought him in, and it pushed Alex Davies down to reserve, then Alex would become a trump card, and that’s exactly what happened, with Alex scoring 16 points on Friday.

“It was a good all-around performance for us. We did drop some points that helped Berwick get a point out of the meeting. Using guests can go for you or can go against you, and in Berwick’s case they found a winner in Ryan Fisher.

“But the main thing was that we made sure we won the meeting. We were always in front, and we always looked like it would stay that way.

“A few people have told me how fantastic Heat 8 was on Friday, maybe the race of the season, but that’s what you get when you’ve got two teams who need the points and are out there battling.”

The countdown is now on for the visit of local rivals Sheffield Tigers to the Eddie Wright Raceway on Bank Holiday Monday (August 31st, 3pm start-time). That meeting is a double-header, also incorporating the Midland Development League Riders’ Championship, so there are 38 heats in total!

“That’s going to be a huge afternoon”, says Godfrey. “We are again after the points in our quest to avoid finishing bottom in the Premier League, while there is also local pride on the line, as we want to get the better of Sheffield at least once in 2015.

“The Sheffield fans will be buoyed by their results against us so far this year, and we’re expecting a large contingent to make their way up the M18, expecting another win for the Tigers. But hopefully we can spoil the party.

“With the MDL Riders’ Final also taking place, it’s a real bumper Bank Holiday afternoon of 38 heats of speedway around the best racetrack in the country.”
