IMPORTANT WEEK AHEAD

THERE’S an important week ahead for the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, with home and away Premier League clashes with the Redcar Bears.

The Scorpions travel to the South Tees Motor Park on Thursday, before entertaining the Bears in the return fixture at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm).

Scunthorpe currently sit in third place in the Premier League table on a total of 28 points, the same as second placed Ipswich. Two positive results will see the Scorpions move into second place, behind only runaway leaders Edinburgh.

Redcar, having ridden one meeting more than Scunthorpe, are currently in eighth place on 19 points. However, the Bears completed the early season double over the Scorpions in the League Cup and Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey is keen to avoid a similar slip-up in the league encounters.

Godfrey said: “This is an important week in our bid for the play-offs. We’ve picked up results from Redcar’s place in the past, just as they’ve picked up results at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

“The team has been in excellent form at home the last few weeks, and we need to be on the ball to keep that going against Redcar. At the same time, it’s time we started picking up a few more points from our away matches.”

SCORPIONS GO FOR FOURS GLORY

FLUIDAIR Power Scunthorpe Scorpions are one of eight teams to have qualified for the Premier League Fours at Peterborough a week on Sunday (August 3).

And promoter Rob Godfrey wants to add to the team’s solitary piece of silverware at Premier League level – the 2012 league title.

“I firmly believe we can win the Fours”, said Godfrey. “It’s on our kind of track. We did very well in our Knockout Cup clash at Peterborough.

“The East Of England Showground has certain similarities to our own Eddie Wright Raceway. It’s a flat out racing track, where riders can really give it a go.

“We will be going to Peterborough with the intention of finishing the meeting stood on the winner’s podium.”

ANDERS REJOINS RYE HOUSE

SWEDE Anders Mellgren, who started the year riding at No 1 for Scunthorpe and suffered a fracture to his spine in an early season meeting at Redcar, has re-joined Rye House, the club who own his contract.

During Mellgren’s spell out of the saddle, the Scorpions signed Dane Nicolai Klindt, whose temporary place became permanent after a great spell of form.

Everyone from Scunthorpe Speedway wishes Anders, who has now recovered his fitness, the best for the remainder of the 2014 season.
